Sydney Launch of Australian Intellectuals
In his new book, Australian Intellectuals, Associate Professor Gregory Melleuish discusses why Australian academics are so often hostile to contemporary Australian life and scathing about our Western heritage.“This culture of intellectuals (has become) embedded in key institutions, including the universities, the world of the arts and the ABC. It (has become) a subculture isolated from mainstream Australia in intellectual ghettos. It is a world which bristles with hostility, negativity and nihilism.”
Join us for drinks and debate as we consider the Australian intellectual landscape and how to move towards a more positive future.
Gregory Melleuish is an associate professor at the University of Wollongong where he teaches Ancient History, World History and Political Theory. He has published widely, especially in Australian intellectual history including Cultural Liberalism in Australia and The Power of Ideas. He was Guest Editor of CIS's Policy magazine.
Australian Intellectuals is published by Connor Court Publishing and will be available for sale by The Constant Reader bookstore on the night.
Tuesday, 28 May 2013, 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm
PP McGuinness Library, Level 4, 38 Oxley Street, St Leonards.
